FILMS AND IMAGERY FROM THE ARCHIVE OF HAMISH GOW

Vintage films and images of early sea kayak adventures in Scotland and Ireland in the 1950/60s.Filmed on 8mm cine camera and standard film cameras, by Hamish Gow, who along with his wife Anne were the first people to kayak to St Kilda in 1965.

Films: SCOTTISH ODYSSEY, GLASGOW TO GALWAY, plus a SLIDESHOW

Films and phtotographs to be presented by Mike Sullivan, keen kayaker and gatherer of Hamish’s archive and images.

Scottish Odyssey, film from around west of Scotland in the 1950/60s ,edited and narrated over with Hamish Gows voice over.Including moving pictures from the Outer and Inner Hebrides including Skye, St Kilda, Staffa, Jura. This film documents parts of the first Kayak trip to St kilda in 1965. Length 53m

Glasgow to Galway , a film from a one week trip in 1959 to Galway via ferry from Glasgow, train to Ireland from Northern Ireland and then kayaking down Irelands west coast. Hamish does narration over this, produced with additional sound effects and music. Length 27m

Slideshow, a selection of still images all taken by Hamish now including city photographs of glasgow and portraits of people during some of his kayak trips presented with music. Length 19m

Film of this type is extremely rare from this time as cameras were vulnerable to sea water and weather conditions. Hamish recorded many of his trips on cine film and film camera. They were carefully restored and  edited in high resolution  and the hard films have now been donated to the Scottish Film Archive.

Before he died in 2017 Hamish was able to narrate directly on the films to try and re create the way his slide shows and film shows would have been shared in that mystical pre digital age , when it took weeks to process images and films and you had to be with each other to share them in social settings. A very distant era for sure ,so please come along and immerse yourself in  the visual  and spoken recordings documenting the birth of Scottish sea kayak adventuring .
