Ambiguous Proposition

An exploration of workplace banter, behavioural assertions, and sexual misconduct allegations and the impact on one man’s future.

Previewing at Skye Bridge Studios before heading to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival August 2024

Ambiguous Proposition is a monologue performed by Hilary Cordery and written by Shona Newmark. The play delves into the legal test applied to sexual harassment in the workplace, leaving the audience to make their own judgment on what actually happened and what matters, based on the facts relayed. The narrative is from the perspective of the alleged harasser’s mother, and her attempt to ‘protect’ her son and ultimately herself.

Hilary Cordery is an established actor and director in non-professional theatres across South East London. Acting credits include: Lady Gay Spanker in London Assurance, Chris in Calendar Girls, Anna Andreyevna in The Government Inspector, Bev / Cathy in Clybourne Park, Harper Reagan in Harper Reagan, Helga in Kindergarten Bromley Little Theatre, Mrs Higgins in Pygmalion, The Festival Theatre, Hever Castle, Helene Hanff in 84 Charing Cross Road, 2021, Carol in The Herd, 2022, Liz in Present Laughter, 2023. Will appear as Mrs Malaprop in Jack Absolute Flies Again, October 2024.

Ambiguous Proposition is written, and produced by Wait, What? The company wrote, produced and devised their namesake work-in-progress play Wait, What? about geographic borders in Ireland, for the 2019 Edinburgh Fringe, under the name Oh-Symmetric Theatre Company. Ambiguous Proposition is about personal borders. It is written by an employment lawyer.

Praise for the writer: (as an employment lawyer):

She listens.
